Wigan Athletic Football Club – The Latics

Wigan Athletic, also known as “the latics” were formed in 1932, straight after the demise of another football club in the area called Wigan Borough. They are currently playing in the Premiership and have done so since they were promoted from the Football League in 2005 – also, this has been the only time they have competed in the top tier of English football. They are also the “youngest” team currently playing in the Premiership in terms of how long the club have been around for.

Wigan’s rise to the top flight really started when Dave Whelan took over the club in 1995; he had injected money into the club from the fortune he received from JJB Sports Wear and started to develop the club. A couple of seasons later they got promoted from Division 3 as champions, then a couple of seasons after that got promoted from Division 2 as champions. After mounting a serious challenge consistently every season to be in the Premiership, they managed to finally do it in 2005 after they got an automatic promotion place .

Wigan’s first kit ever was a white and red halved shirt, black shorts and red socks; this theme was carried over the next couple of seasons until they decided to change it in 1947, to the blue and white kit we familiarise Wigan with today. During 1993-1995 they tried out a black and blue stripe kit (similar to Inter Milan’s) but this was not received well by the fans.
