Stoke City Football Club

Stoke City were founded in 1863 and are based in Stoke-on-Trent. They are the oldest club that are currently playing in the Premier League and it is believed that they are the second oldest club to be playing in the world – Notts County being the first. Stoke’s only major honour they have won is the League Cup in 1972.

Even though Stoke City have very little honours to mention they are responsible for the clubs most famous player, Stanley Matthews. Stanley Matthews started his career at Stoke in 1932 at just the age of 17. By his late 20’s he became a well established England international – he is highly regarded as one of the all time greats in English football, play at the top tier of football up until the age of 50 years old (a record still yet to be broken).

Stoke went through many different colours for there kit in the early stages, for example, from 1870 – 1883 they wore blue and black horizontal stripes. And in 1897 to 1908 they wore a maroon shirt. Ever since 1908 up until now though they have worn red and white stripe shirts, white shorts (except for 1983-86 where they wore red), and a mix of white or red socks.
