Manchester United Football Club – The Red Devils
Manchester United, also known as “The Red Devils” were formed in 1878 as Newton Heath originally. They are reputed to be one of, if not the single most successful of the professional football clubs in the UK, playing in the top flight of English football since 1938 except for one season in 1974. United’s honours include 18 League Titles, 11 F.A Cups, 3 League Cups and 3 European Cups.
The clubs recent domination in football is largely down to Alex Ferguson, who has won 22 major trophies since is tenure began in 1986. United were the first ever English side to claim a European Cup when they beat Benfica in the final 4-1. The second European Cup then won in fact was in the season where they won the historic “Treble” in 1999 – claiming the Premier League, F.A Cup and Champions League. This club joins Liverpool in having won 18 English League Titles, a national record. They 11 F.A Cups they have won is also a record.
When the club was known as Newton Heath they played in various different colours – the green and yellow halved shirts being the most recognisable of them all. In fact this kit was used as inspiration for the away shirt they wore in the early 1990’s. The famous red shirts, white shorts and black socks you see today were brought in when they changed there name to Manchester United in 1902. Those jerseys have become the template which all home kits have been based upon.
