About Sports

Sport can be defined as a physical activity or active pastime or recreation which involves a physical exertion and/or skill that is governed by a set of rules and/or customs and often undertaken competitively and on a professional basis.

This site will concentrate on sports where the physical proficiency, effectiveness and efficiency of the participants are primary in determining the outcome of a given sport event. We will also include events such as motor sports where mental agility and alertness or quality of equipment are major contributory factors.

It could be said that sports can be defined as being competitive and skilful physical activities requiring both commitment and fair play. At its top levels, professional sponsorship is often associated with sport. Although not always able to succeed, sports competitors are expected to display good sportsmanship, and to be respectful of both opponents and officials, and to congratulate the winner.

Historical artifacts suggests that sporting activities have been organised over several thousand years ago with sports such as swimming and gymnastics being popular. A range of sports were established by the time of Ancient Greece. Sport became prominent in their culture and it is the Greeks who created the Olympic Games, which in ancient times, as they are today, were held every four years.

Professional sport has become more prominent, the advent of dedicated sports television channels further adding to the increase in sports popularity. Now fans are able to follow the exploits of their sporting heroes via the media of radio, television, and the most recently the internet, whilst still being able to enjoying the exercise and competition with participation in amateur sports of all kinds.
