Burnley Football Club – The Clarets

Burnley Football Club are also known as “The Clarets” and are one of the founding members of The Football League in 1888. Interestingly, at the beginning of their formation they were a rugby club initially called Burnley Rovers. In 1882, however the owners of the club decided to change to be a  football club. One of the clubs main honours is the FA Cup they won in 1914.

Other notable achievements from them include winning 2 League Titles – once in 1921 and the other in 1959-60. Burnley were also to get as far as the quarter-finals of the European Cup in 1961 but they were knocked out by Hamburg when they lost 4-1 at Turf Moor. The Clarets are also one of the very few clubs (alongside Preston North End & Wolverhampton Wanderers) to have won all 4 divisions in England at some point in their history.

Burnley’s kit has mainly been comprised of white shorts, claret shirts with blue sleeves and white socks – which is why they have been given the name “The Clarets”. However, they have had periods in the past where they weren’t dressed in claret,  such as the time between  1900-1909 where they wore green shirts, white shorts and black/white socks.
