Aston Villa – The Villa or The Villains
Aston Villa, also known as “The Villa” or “The Villains” are a professional English football club based in Aston, Birmingham. They were founded in 1874 by Jack Hughes, Walter Price, William Scattergood & Frederick Matthews. They are a considered to be one of the biggest football clubs in England. In 1888, they were in fact one the 12 football clubs that founded the football league and also were one of the clubs to have founded the Premier League in 1992.
The tag of being called one of the biggest clubs in England is backed up by Aston Villa’s illustrious history – claiming 7 League Titles, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups & 1 European Cup. They are one of only four teams from England to have actually won the European Cup (along with Liverpool, Manchester United & Nottingham Forest). They achieved this by beating Bayern Munich in Rotterdam on the 26th May 1982.
In Aston Villa’s 133 year history, they have had 24 managers in total. However the most successful person to have taken charge at Villa was not an official manager at the time – this man was George Ramsey, who won a total of 6 League titles & 6 FA Cups in his 42 year reign as secretary.
For the first few years of Villa’s formation the kit was different nearly every season in terms of colour and design – the team kit went through various stages from all black, white and blue, red and blue to plain green. And in 1880, William McGregor (the chairman at the time) introduced a plain black kit with a red lion stitched on the chest; and this kit stayed as the 1st choice strip for another six years. But from 1886 to present day the club kit of Aston Villa has been a claret & sky blue shirt accompanied with either white or black shorts.
