The 2010 World Cup will take place in South Africa this summer. FIFA, footballs international governing organisation run the championship every four years. The first World Cup tournament was held in 1930 and has been played every four years since with the exception of 1942 and 1946 when WW2 prevented any international sport being played.
In its present form, the World Cup is contested between 32 teams who have qualified to play in the finals by playing in groups of teams from their own geographical location. The host nation is exempted from qualifying with an automatic entry into the draw for the World Cup final 32 teams. It is estimated that the World Cup is the single most viewed sports event in the world. It has been estimated that over 700 million people watched the 2006 World Cup final.
Over the years a total of 18 tournaments have been contested. Seven nations have been good enough to win the World Cup trophy. Only one nation has qualified to play in every tournament held so far and have won the World Cup a total of five times. They are the Brazil, Italy has won four titles, and Germany three. Other World Cup winners are Uruguay, who won the first ever competition, and Argentina, who have both won two tournaments each. England and France have won once each.
The original World Cup trophy was named Jules Rimet Trophy after the FIFA president who organised the very first Word Cup tournament. Brazil won the trophy for the third time in 1970. This victory entitled them to keep the trophy on a permanent basis. This trophy has allegedly been melted down after being stolen in 1983.
A new trophy, was designed and made from 18 carat solid gold and it weighs in at an impressive 13.6 lb or just over 6 kilogrammes. This new World Cup trophy is awarded to the competition winners who are allowed to retain it four years until the next tournament. The winning nation do however, get to keep a gold plated replica of the trophy rather that the original solid gold FIFA World Cup trophy.
